On Feb 15 2013 Jan was honored with a 1 st. prize in World Press Photo’s Award (sports feature) for his story about Suweys and her friends playing Basketball in Mogaddishu, Somalia. The award comes with a 1500€ cash prize that Jan has decided to donate to Suweys and her teammates after the award ceremony in Amsterdam in April.

Jan feels that the award money should go to Suweys and her friends. These brave women are risking their lives for their passion to play Basketball and allowing Jan to tell their story. We will be looking forward to go back and give it to them in person… And will of course document the delivery of the money to Suweys and her team. They truly deserve it.
